In January of 1981, the DuPage Senior Citizens Council and the
Elmhurst Senior Citizens Commission co-sponsored a workshop to
discuss affordable housing for seniors. The workshop introduced
these community members to the concept of shared group
residences for seniors. The Share-A-Home Association in
Winter Park, Florida, also presented their program. These commission
members moved forward to incorporate Senior Home Sharing as a
not-for-profit organization, and a charter Board of
Directors was formed. Two years later, Senior Home Sharing
purchased the first shared home, a spacious, ranch in Lombard
named Chase Place. Over the next years, four more properties
were acquired: Van Buren Place in Elmhurst; Willow Path in
Lombard (a four-unit senior apartment building); Park Place in
Downers Grove and Eagle Place in Naperville. Homes were
acquired with Community Development Block Grants from the U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban Development to DuPage County and
the City of Naperville. Senior Home Sharing has served
over 250 residents since we opened our first home in 1983.
