The need for affordable senior housing
in DuPage County continues to expand. The population of
seniors 60 and older has increased twenty-four percent in
the last ten years. In the 75-84 age group, the census
increased by 52.8% and for those over 85, there was a 78.7
percent. The number of seniors is predicted to continue to
increase dramatically over the next two decades,
highlighting this housing gap.
Senior Home Sharing is a
not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping meet this need
for affordable senior housing by providing a shared housing
option. SHS group homes are located in Lombard, Downers
Grove, Elmhurst and Naperville. In addition, the
organization operates a four-unit senior apartment in
Lombard.
Senior Home Sharing’s
mission is to provide seniors with an opportunity to live
independently in an affordable family-style home. This
shared senior lifestyle allows residents to balance their need for
privacy while staying involved and connected with other residents,
the house manager, volunteers and the community.
Each home has its unique
characteristics, but all provide a warm, comfortable
residence including private bedrooms for six to seven
seniors, the services of a live-in manager, and three
home-prepared meals a day. Seniors rent a private room
within one of our homes and furnish it with their own
belongings. Common areas of the home such as the kitchen,
living room, family room and porch or patio areas are shared
by the residents. All of the homes are located within
residential neighborhoods and are close to shopping, parks,
senior centers, libraries and community services.
In addition, case
management and opportunities for activities and
socialization occur on a regular basis. |
